Create Multiple libraries in Picasa

January 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Not sure how I feel about this one, seems a little too hacky / risky for me. This blog post describes how to create multiple picasa libraries by using multiple OS accounts in windows. Thought I wouild link to it anyway in case you needed it for some reason…

Picasa is the best desktop photo management software I have seen so far. Although it can maintain videos too, its main strength is the photo management. So if you have downloaded a LOT of pictures beautiful ladies off the internet and would like to browse through them sometime Picasa is the best tool. However, if you also use picasa to maintain your personal photos, they would easily get lost among thousands of those other photos. Unfortunately picasa doesn’t have a feature of maintaining seperate profiles (Although it does provide a option to hide folders it is a pain). I searched for any tweak or tool to achieve this but couldn’t find any - then I came up with a simple idea below {this works in Windows XP, although I have Windows Vista, I never boot to that now so haven’t tried it there}:

Extending Picasa: The Future of Memories Collection

Part of an ongoing series on web pages extensions in Picasa.

One of the really nice features in Picasa is the ability to add new Web Page Export formats. This gives you the ability to create really beautiful web galleries for your photos just by following a simple wizard.

This is a bundled group of templates called “The Future of Memories.” This bundle includes one template we have reviewed before: autoviewer from Airtight interactive. There are a total of 7 templates that generate flash-based web pages. Some are quirky, some are cute, but they are all awesome in their way. Slide on over and download the templates.

PostcardViewer sample

First you need to get the postcard viewer extension. Head on over to their web site and download the package. Make sure you download the one designed for Picasa.

Technique: Enhancing Portraits. (AKA: The Orton Effect)

February 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Update: Apologies. Looks like I copied the wrong set of links to the images. Should be better now, I hope!

A short time Photojojo had a link to a tutorial for “The Orton Effect” — an homage to photographer Michael Orton who uses multiple slides to create a wonderful dreamy effect in photos.

The tutorial above shows how to do this in Photoshop. As it turns out, Picasa is well suited to the same task. And, it’s super easy. Let’s take a look.

First, we need our original image:

Then, save a copy of this image, so that we have two.

Now, working on the copy, use the soft-focus feature on the effects tab. We want to soften everywhere but the subjects face. So, adjust the “size” slider so that the subjects face remain sharp, and slide the “Amount” slider up to the maximum blur.

Here is how the image looks after the first softening.

Now, go right back to the soft focus effect, This time, slide the “size” all the way down to the minimum, so that the entire image is blurred, and slide the “Amount” to approximately one-quarter. We want to blur the facial features just a bit, while the rest of the image is very blurry.

Here is how the image looks after the second softening:

Now, we need to darken the blurred image. Switch over to the tuning tab add shadow to the image so that the colors are dark and rich, but not black. use your discretion, start with the slider about half way up, add more on subsequent tries if needed.

Here is how the image looks after adding shadow:

Good stuff. Now we have two images, one original and one dark, blurry copy of the original.

Select the two images in the library, and choose “Create” then “Picture Collage”. Select the “Multi-Exposure” collage type.

Click the ‘Create’ button and the new merged image will be added to the same directory.
(Note: I have found, for reasons unexplained, that sometimes collages don’t work the first time, and you just see another copy of one of the two images — if that happens, just do the collage again. )

Here is how the final image appears:

Here is a comparison, original and edited:

I love that soft-yet-sharp effect. It does wonderful things for skin tones, and helps soften hard lines created by a flash.

This works for all sorts of images, not just portraits:

Give it a try, let me know how it works for you in the comments.

Oh, the model is my wife — gorgeous, ain’t she? She keeps her real estate website here
